As the sole representative of North Sumatra in Liga 1, PSMS Medan aims to finish in the top five of the country's top soccer league by the end of the season.
Finishing in the top five is not seen as an unrealistic target for the club, which was just promoted from Liga 2, the country's second-division soccer league.
PSMS midfielder Legimin Raharjo supported his club's goal, saying it was reasonable.
"Looking at the competition of Liga 1, it's not easy to finish in the top five," Legimin said as quoted by bolasport.com. "But this is team-work; players and coaches must fight together to achieve the target."
With the addition of several new clubs, especially ever since the era of perserikatan, a national amateur soccer competition held from 1931-1994, prior to the formation of the Indonesian League, the 36-year-old player added that this year's competition would be much tougher.
Hard work and strong will should be the team's focus to achieve the target, Legimin said, citing that the two characteristics were key to the club's successfull performance in Liga 2.
"The composition of players also influences whether we can compete and finish in the top five. We hand over the matter to our coach," he concluded.
The 2018 season of the top-flight competition ia set to run from February to October.
