Galaxy Chief Says "Doors Open" for Ibra

AFP/Los Angeles

Los Angeles Galaxy president Chris Klein say the club's "door are open" for Zlatan Ibrahimovic but the Swedish star wants to stay in Europe.
"We have an incredible relationship with Zlatan and his agent," Klein said Friday as the Major League Soccer club introduced new signing Jonathan Dos Santos.
"He loves our club, and he loves LA," Klein said. "We have an interest in him. I think, for now, he wants to stay in Europe. Our doors are open for a player like that. We have rights to him in our league. We'll see where that goes."
Ibrahimovic was linked to a Galaxy move on July 13, when the Los Angeles Times reported the club could ne nearing a deal that would make the player, currently a free agent coming back from serious knee injury, thw highest paid player in MLS history.
On July 14, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho told reporters in Los Angeles that Ibrahimovic would be given the chance to resurrect his United career after a double cruciate ligament injury cut short a succesful first season.
Speaking during United's North American pre season tour, Mourinho said Ibrahimovic could return to the club next season - also saying that despite suggestions of an MLS move the Swede preferred to stay in Europe.

La Liga to File PSG Complaint Over Neymar

AFP/Madrid

Spain's soccer league chief Javier Tebas said he will file a complaint with UEFA for financial fair play breaches againts Paris Saint Germain over their pursuit of Brazilian superstar Neymar.
PSG is rumored to be weighing up a bid for the Barcelona forward at more than £200 million (US$235 million), enough to trigger the 25 year old's transfer release clause,
"La Liga will file this complaint because it's a problem for La
Liga's competitiveness. Today it's happened to Barca; tomorrow it coul happen to Real Madrid, it's happened to Atletico Madrid," Tebas, the La Liga chairman, told Mundo Deportivo.
Should PSG bids, and then pays, the £222 million needed to prize Neymar from Catalan capital, it would struggle to meet UEFA's financial fair play conditions that limit a team to losses of no more than £30 million over a thre year cycle.
And that is despite a mega money sponsorship deal with the Qatar tourism board.
According to Tebas, "no one to believes" the commercial revenue figures presented by PSG to justify its spending.
"PSG cannot have figures in which PSG's commercial rights exceed those of Real Madrid and Barcelona, said Tebas. "No one believes that. We've carried out economic studies and it's impossible."
In 2014, PSG was fined £60 million and handed transfer spending restrictions by UEFA for breaching financial fair play rules.

MU Gears Up For Title Charge, Man City's Shopping Spree Not Over

Agencies
London/ New York

Manchester United is better equipped to fight for the Premier League title in the upcoming season but need to improve further to be a contender for the Champions League, manages Jose Mourinho has said.
In Mourinho's first season at Old Trafford, United won the League Cup and the Europa League but finished sixth in the English top flight, 24 points behind champions Chelsea.
"This season is going to be more difficult but I think we have better conditions to fight for the Premier League," Mourinho told the BBC, as quoted by Reuters. "I think this season we are a little bit better equipped. We are againts fantastic teams, againts amazing invesments.
"But I believe in our group, in our spirit, in our empathy, in our togetherness. I trust my boys and we are going to try."
Having lifted the Europa League in May, United secured direct entry to the Champions League group stage but the Portuguese manager believes it is still behind the continent's top clubs.
"We went to the Europa League as one of the top teams, we go to the Champions League and we are not one of the top teams," Mourinho added. "We have to be better, much better, for that objective. The base of everything is to find what I call a happy dressing room."
Mourinho has added striker Romelo Lukaku and centre back Victor Lindelof in the current transfer window but is still hoping to sign two more players ahead of the new season.
"One midfield player would give me more options. The other is an attacking player through the wings to give me more attacking options," he said.
The British Media have linked United with Chelsea's Nemanja Matic and Tottenham Hotspur's Eric Dier as midfield options. Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic is Mourinho's preferred choice to improve the attacking line, the reports have said.
United kick off its league campaign at home againts West Ham United on Aug. 13.
Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola has confirmed Manchester City are "still looking" to add to their £200 million (US$260 million) summer spending spree, although he refused to comment on the possibility of hijacking Real Madrid's move for Kylian Mbappe.
City has been the major shoppers in the transfer market after splashing out a Premier League record total of £200 million to bring Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker, Ederson, Danilo and Douglas Luiz to the Etihad.
But it remains likely that it will continue its haul after being strongly linked with moves for Arsenal frontman Alexis Sanchez and Monaco teenage striker Mbappe.
Mbappe has been on City's radar throughout the summer, although there have been strong suggestions in Spain that Real has agreed a fee of £160 million for the 18 year old.
Ahead of Wednesday's International Champions Cup encounter againts Real Madrid, in Los Angeles, Guardiola wasn't being drawn on either.
"They are Monaco and Arsenal players, so nothing to say," he said, as quoted by AFP.
But he did confirm that City was still looking at options in the market, albeit he was coy on whether another striker was on the agenda.
"The market finishes on Aug. 31, which is not good for the managers.
"The competition (Premier League) starts on the 12th (of August) and the market is still open. That is not good for all the clubs.
"We will see until the end of the transfer window,"

Real Clinches World Record Deal For Mbappe: Reports

Agence France Presse
Paris/ Madrid

Real Madrid has reportedly reached a world record deal in principle to sign Kylian Mbappe from Monaco for £180 million (US$210 million), closing one of the hottest transfer sagas of the summer.
Spanish sports daily Marca, citing sources close to the negotiations, said the gifted teenage striker who shot to stardom last season is expected to join Real "in the next few days" on a six year deal.
French newspapers Le Parisien and Nice Matin were quick to announce that Monaco had denied the report. But in the cloak and dagger climate of rumours and innuendo that characterises football's transfer operations, the latest twist revived speculation surrounding the future of Europe's most eligible young star.
Only the rumor mill surrounding Neymar and the massive sums involved has come close to eclipsing the buzz generated by Mbappe in recent weeks.
Neymar, Barcelona's 25 year old Brazilian superstar, is at the centre of frenzied speculation linking him to Paris Saint Germain for a world record £222 million, the price of his buyout clause.
The likelihood of that deal looks to have receded in the past few days as the Mbappe move takes centre stage. And if it goes through, Real will have completed a major coup by snatching one of the most coveted young players in football from under the noses of top European clubs including PSG and Premier League giants including Manchester City.
Real midfielder Casemiro, on tour with the European champion in United States, refused to be drawn on the speculation ahead of Wednesday's friendly clash againts Manchester City in Los Angeles.
"Mbappe is not a Real Madrid player so I can't speak about him," said Casemiro.
But Marca, known to have strong links to the Madrid club, insisted that Real is set to pay between £150 million and £160 million with add ons of between £20 million and £30 million for Mbappe, dwarfing the current world transfer record of £105 million Manchester United paid to lure Paul Pogba from Juventus last year.
Real is looking to fill the void left by Alvaro Morata, who joined Premier League champion Chelsea last Friday in a deal reported to be worth up to £80 million.
Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane, asked about Mbappe last week, said that Real was short one attacker, that's how things are," he said. "We will see how we will manage that."
If he does arrive at Zidane's European championships the 18 year old will be on a net annual salary of "£7 million," Marca said.
Mbappe, under contract at Monaco until 2019, has been wooed so hard by some of Europe's top clubs that Monaco raised the red card and warned the circling predators that they could be reported to FIFA, world soccer's governing body.
"Top European football clubs made contact with Kylian Mbappe and his entourage with out our authorization," Monaco said on their website.
The club said it wanted to remind these cluns that such actions are contrary to French and international regulations.
Mbappe scored six goals in six Champions League starts and 15 in Ligue 1 as he exploded onto the scene in the second half of last season.
On Monday, Monaco lost full back Benjamin Mendy to Manchester City in a world record £52 million deal for a defender.
Elsewhere, Gerard Pique has sparked panic at Barcelona after appearing to backtrack on his "he stay" tweet on teammate Neymar, target of a blockbuster transfer by Paris Saint Germain.
"Doubts, doubts and more doubys," ran the headline Wednesday on the front page of Catalan daily Sport above a photo of the striker lost deep in thought.
PSG are trying to lure the 25 year old Btazilian to France and are ready to pay off his £222 million release clause and make the player the best paid soccer player on the planet.
Last week Pique took to social media to say "he's staying" - but when pressed on the matter Tuesday ahead of a preseason friendly in the US againts Manchester United he was less sure of himself.
"It's a personal opinion from the conversation that I had with him and my intuition," Pique said. "But it's not official," he added. "And it's not for me to say if he's going to stay or not."
The position sent a shudder down the spine at Barcelona.

Top Chinese Clubs Pay Debts After Threat

AFP/ Shanghai

Ten Chinese Super League clubs say they have paid off debts related to player wages, bonuses and transfers after 13 of them were threatened with expulsion.
Shanghai Shenhua, who signed Argentine striker Carlos Tevez in January on what are believed to be among the highest wages in world soccer, and Oscar's Shanghai SIPG are among the top tier clubs who say their books are now clean.
The Chinese Football Association (CFA) said in astatement published by one team that the Asian Football Confederation had asked 18 top flight and lower league clubs on July 11 to clear their debts by an Aug. 15 deadline.
The teams were warned that they could be banned from all AFC matches and next season's Chinese league if they failed to send proof of payment by then.
As of Wednesday, 10 CSL clubs including Paulinho's Guangzhou Evergrande, big spending Shanghai SIPG and Shenhua said it had cleared its book of debt. The CSL had 16 teams and only three had not been sent a debt notice.
The debt situation of three other clubs - Fabio Cannavaro's Tianjin Quanjian, Tianjin Teda and Liaoning Hongyun - was unclear.

Adobe to Stop Flash by 2020

Bloomberg/ San Francisco

Adobe Systems Inc.'s Flash service - which had long faced criticism for its cumbersome user experience and vulnerability to hacking - is finally set to fade into history.
At the end of 2020, the company will stop updating and distributing the online tool, a separate plug in that improves graphically intensive activities for web surfers like video and playing games, Adobe said in a blog post Tuesday.
Adobe, which made the change in collaboration with Apple Inc., Alphabet Inc.'s Google, Facebook Inc. and other tech companies, is encouraging developers that use the Flash program to seek other options.
Once a key tool for accessing dynamic internet content, Flash has come under growing scrutiny with many of its functions now folded into web browsers througj new open standard - eliminating the need to download the program separately.
Apple's Steve Jobs criticized the software in a 2010 open letter about its technical drawbacks, and in 2015, Facebook's chief security officer, Alex Stamos, called for its demise.
Adobe acknowledged the progress made as open standards have matured, creating a viable alternative for web content. But it noted that it will also "remain at the forefront" of leading development of new web standards, and provide "best in class" animation and video tools.
Through 2020, Adobe said it will continue to issue any needed security patches and keep Flash compatible with operating systems and web browsers, the company said.

Penglipuran - Cleanliness Through Conservation

Ganug Nugroho Adi
The Jakarta Post/ Bangli, Bali

Clean and tidy house can be found in neat rows in Penglipuran, a traditional village located at an altitude of 700 meters in Kubu sub district in Bangli, Bali.
Penglipuran was declared one of the world's cleanest villages in 2016 along with Giethoorn floating village in the Netherlands and Mawlynnong village in India.
Previously in 1995, the village community of Penglipuran also received the Indonesian goverment's Kalpataru Award for environmental sustainability for raising and maintaining 75 hectares of bamboo forest as well as preserving its traditional spatial layout and buildings based on ancestral designs.
The village has also been a tourist attraction since 1993. In the last five years, Penglipuran has been one of the most frequently visited tourist destinations in Bali alongside the regions of Ubud, Kuta and Nusa Dua.
Penglipuran is among Bali's oldest villages, having existed since the 18th century, during the period of the Bangli Kingdom.
The name of the village is derived from the words pengeling or eling, which means "to remember" and pura, which means "ancestral land."
The name Penglipuran, therefore, implies that residents keep the land of their ancestors in mind.
From the beginning, Penglipuran has been unique among villages in Bali.
Along with Trunyan village, Penglipuran has been designtated a Bali Aga village, or original Balinese village, for preserving its ancestral traditions.
Visiting Penglipuran is like taking a trip in a time machine back to Bali's more traditional times.
"Amid the intense forces of modernization, Penglipuran continues to retain its ancestral tradition. I think this has attracted many tourists to our village," chairman of the Penglipuran Village Tourism Awareness Group, I Nengah Moneng, said.
Moneng revealed that before becoming a tourist destination in 1993, the locals had conducted conservation works through the village's ancestral traditions in the interests of future generations.
In 1990, villagers along with students on rural service assignments, also developed parks by utilizing portions of the village road to the front and side of house yards.
"Originally, there was no intention to attract tourists, only the mere purpose of conservation so that our children could be aware of their ancestral traditions and culture," Moneng said.
Unexpectedly, the conservation efforts attracted the attention of Bangli regency administration, leading to its declaration as a tourist village.
Today the 112 hectare village is home to 985 people from 234 families.
They inhabit 76 equally divided plots, each facing the main road.
The rows of houses are separated by a stone paved main road with trimly cut grass on either side.
The village is notable for its consistent architecture, from roofing to room design. Most homes are built from brick, however some are made from woven bamboo.
The village entry gate is marked by a large temple, which rises above the houses around it. The gas emission free vehicle zone starts at the main entry gate of the village.
Penglipuran residents maintain a high respects for women, with men prohibited from having more than one wife. Any violation of this law is liable to ostracism.
This village also has its own punishment for theft. Those found guilty are obligated to give five chickens as offerings to four ancestral temples. The sanction is meant to embarrass the perpetrators.
Being neat, clean, beautiful and unique has turned Penglipuran into a major tourist destination, with its number of visitors growing from 250 daily in 2014 to 250 in 2015 and to 400 in 2016. Admission is Rp15,000 for local tourist and Rp30,000 for foreigners.
"Around 60 percent of the fees go to the regency administration and 40 percent to the village as the management body," said Penglipuran village treasurer I Wayan Supat.
Half of the amount for the village is spent on personnel salaries and the other half on ritual ceremonies, including Galungan to honor the Creator and ancestral spirits, which is held twice a year.
Village residents derive economic benefit from tourism ad they earn incomes by selling souvenirs, opening food stalls, serving as guides and offering homestays.
Aside from Galungan, Penglipuran is also crowded during the Penglipuran Village Festival in December and Penglipuran Blooming in July.

Retro Trend Lights Up London's Labyrinth of Neon

Edouard Guihaire
Agence France Presse/ London

Whether in search of a glowing skull or a bright red heart, God's Own Junkyard in London is a maze of multicolored neon of all shapes and sizes which is thriving on its retro reputation.
In a vast warehouse in the east of the British capital sits Europe's biggest collection of neon signs.
In here we've got 1,400 pieces," said the creative director of God's Own Junkyard, Marcus Bracey, walking through the treasure trove of brightly illuminated tubes.
Most are for sale - a heart with the British flag emblazoned with "God Save the Queen" across it, for instance, or an enormous pair of bright red lips with a tongue reaching out to the top of an ice cream cone.
"We've got a mixture of sex, contemporary art, everything," said Bracey.
"From love through lust, everything's here.'
Some of the signs date back to the 1950s, while others can cost thousands of pounds, such as a cowboy like Jesus Christ clutching two blue revolvers, which has been sold but never picked up by its new owner.
The hip, disco like space has evolved from suitably colorful origins through several generations of Bracey's grandfather, a former coal miner, in the 1950s.
Bracey, 43, jokes that his grandfather "came up from the dark to the light" and found his passion after leaving the mines to work for a lightning company.
It was the next generation that developed the business, now based in the up and coming east London neighbourhood, Walthamstow.
Bracey's late father, Chris, became a major supplier of neon signs to the sex shops of London's Soho district.
But, as the neighborhood started to shed its seedy reputation, signs such as the neon lit shapely figure of a woman, began finding their way to God's Own Junkyard.
The family has also produced signs for film shoots, such as the flashing dragon sign used in Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" in 1982 - Bracey vows he will never sell it.
A rainbow sign was also crafted for Stanley Kubrick's 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
While the buyers have changed, the technology has hardly evolved.
Neon technology was first developed in 1910 by Georges Claude, a French chemist who was looking for a cheaper way to produce oxygen for hospitals.
Since his remarkable finding that different gases produced an array of vivid colors, neon has gone on to conquer the world of advertising.
From Paris to New York, it remains "one of the great symbols of the 20th century, signifying in turn the utilitarian conquest of the night" and "electric globalization," wrote philosopher Luis de Miranda in his essay "Being and Neon" on the cultural history of neon signs.
But despite a boom in the bright lights, the industry has faced tough times.
"In the 1980s, there was a big shrink in demand and neon workshops were all closing. We thought almost it was the end of neon," Bracey said.
"But it has come back," he said, with the help of individual buyers in search of retro designs, which make up 50 percent of his clients.
And the future looks bright for God's Own Junkyard.
Bracey's two children say the yard provides an exciting and colorful playground and that they are aware of its importance in their family history. "It's always been in our blood, in our DNA!" one of them said.

Jamaica Aims To Slay Another Giant, Faces US In Gold Cup Final

Agence France Presse/ Los Angeles

Jamaica is out to end North America's stranglehold on the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Gold Cup when it takes on the favored United States Wednesday in the final at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
The arrival of Bruce Arena's men in the title match of the regional championship for North and Central America is no surprise.
Even though they were denied a berth by the Jamaicans with a semifinal loss in 2015, they are homing in on a sixth title in the regional championship for the North and Central America and the Caribbean.
Since the Gold Cup was instituted in 1991, Mexico has won seven titles, the United States five and Canada one - in 2000.
But Jamaica is knocking on the door again.
It stunned defending champion Mexico in the semifinals to become the only team besides the US or El Tri to reach back to back finals.
"That's a cycle we want to break," Jamaican coach Theodore Whitmore said of the US-Mexico dominance in the event  and the region.
"That's what we, as staff and players, discuss. It's always Mexico-US. We want to be in that top group.
"We want to be a team, a country that someone can talk about. And that's what we're working toward."
Inspired work in goal by captain Andre Blake - and a stunning game winning free kick by Kemar Lawrence in the 1-0 semifinal win againts Mexico - has brought the Caribbean country back in the final.
The Reggae Boyz were well organized defensively and played with composure againts an inexperienced Mexican side, which also had to make do without coach Juan Carlos Osorio as he served a six game FIFA ban for comments about officials at last month's Confederations Cup in Russia.
Jamaica has allowed only two goals across five matches so far.
"We have a bit of youth and experience and that's been taking us through the tournament," Whitmore said. "I think we have a solid back five, including Andre Blake - very organized."
"There are areas of the field that still need to improve , but it's working, obviously, in a tournament. And we have to play according to the tournament to get a result."
Like Mexico, the US brought a young, untried squad into the group stage, but Arena called on the old guard for the knockout rounds and they have not disappointed.
Clint Dempsey equaled the US record with his 57th international goal in the team's 2-0 semifinal victory over Costa Rica.
He could surpass the mark set by Landon Donovan with a goal againts Jamaica.
The US is unbeaten in 13 matches since Arena returned to the helm, replacing Germany's Jurgen Klinsmann who was sacked after a 4-0 loss to Costa Rica in World Cup qualifying.
Costa Rica coach Oscar Ramirez said Arena's return had re energized the USA.
"With Klinsmann there was a certain tension, perhaps because several had problems with him," Ramirez said. "I think Bruce has restored their level."

Premier League Clubs Set To Break $1.5B Record Spend

Reuters/ London

Premier League clubs have spent more than £850 million (US$1.1 billion) in this summer's transfer window and are on course to break their record, data released by website Sporting Intelligence showed on Monday.
With more than a month remaining before the close of transfer business on Aug. 31, English clubs are again proving to be Europe's heaviest spenders and will likely top the £1.165 billion ($1.5 billion) they lavished on new players last summer.
Manchester City has spent the most, £188 million on six new players, with Monaco's Bernard Mendy becoming the latest to join on Monday. City did not publish a fee, but British media reported it to be around £49 million.
City has received £34.2 million from selling five players, leaving a net spend of more than £150 million. Champion Chelsea is the next biggest spender on £130.4 million, followed by Manchester United on £105.8 million, although Jose Mourinho's club say they will make a further two signings during this transfer window.
Meanwhile, Everton which has spent £93.4 million, has recouped it all, mainly by selling Romelo Lukaku to Manchester United. Arsenal, which manager Arsene Wenger has been under pressure to bring in new players after a disappointing season, has so far spent £52.7 million.
Three clubs, Tottenham Hotspur, Stoke City and Crystal Palace have yet to spend antyhing, with Spurs currently £74.3 million in credit on all deals.
All three teams promoted to the Premier League have invested, with Huddersfield's £36.4 million just topping Newcastle United's £31.2 million, while Brighton and Hove Albion have spent just £13.3 million.
The figures reflect the huge riches being pumped into the world's most lucrative league, with clubs receiving £8.3 billion in TV rights alone for the current three year cycle.
Such riches mean Premier League clubs are paying a premium in the market. West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis became the latest to question the current trend of hyperinflation.
"At the moment the market out there has gone crazy," he said last week. At £19.8 million, Albion has been one of the league's most modest spenders.
The new season of Premier League will stary on Aug. 11.
In the meantime, Mexican striker Javier Hernandez has completed a transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Wet Ham United for £16 million, the Premier League club announced on Monday.
The 29 year old, who previously spent five years in England with Manchester United winning two league titles, joins Slaven Bilic's side on a three year deal after completing a medical in London.
A popular figure in his home country, Hernandez became Mexico's all time leading goal scorer earlier this year after scoring 48 goals in 96 appearances, including at two World Cups. His two years at Bundesliga outfit Leverkusen also yielded 28 goals in 54 games.
Hernandez, known as "Chicarito," arrives at West Ham following the high profile acquisitions of Argentine Pablo Zabaleta, England's Joe Hart and Austrian Marko Arnautovic.
The Mexican told the club's website that he could not wait to get started at the London Stadium.
"For me, the Premier League is the best league in the world and when the opportunity came, I was desperate to sign for this club," he told the club's website.
"It was not a difficult decision. West Ham is an historic club, and very ambitious - this summer you can see with the players signed that they are looking to have a very good season."
Elsewhere, Chelsea's new signing Alvaro Morata believes his was destined to play under manager Antonio Conte at a club good enough to compete with Europe's elite. Morata had joined Juventus ahead of the 2014-15 season, shortly after Conte had left the side to take charge of the Italian national side.
The pair has now been united at Stamford Bridge and the Spanish striker was confident he can adapt to Conte's tactics.
"I know Antonio wanted me in the past and I really want to work with Antonio, and finally destiny put us together," Morata told the clubb website.
The 24 year old Spain international backed the defending Premier League champions to go toe to toe with Europe's top sides, including his former club Real Madrid, which won their second successive Champions League title last season. Morata took the vacant number nine jersey.

I'am Staying at Real, Says Ronaldo

AFP/ Madrid

Ending weeks of speculation about his future, Cristiano Ronaldo has told a Spanish newspaper he is staying put at Real Madrid to plunder more silverware.
"To win important trophies with my club and the personal honors last season was brilliant, to do it again would be nice," Ronaldo told the sport daily Marca on Tuesday in an interview from Shanghai.
Ronaldo's declaration of intent to remain at the Bernabeu for the upcoming season comes despite rumours of his departure which surfaced last month in Potuguese newspaper O Globo.
Those reports were founded on his apparent feeling of abandonment by his club over his run in with the Spanish tax authorities.
Ronaldo, 32, has been summoned to appear before a judge near Madrid on July 31 to answer four counts of evading £14.7 million (US$16.8 million) in taxes.
The four time Ballon d'Or winner has protested his innocence with O Globo saying he had threatened to leave Real over the invertigation. Since extending his contract last November until 2021, Ronaldo is the highest paid sports star in the world with $93 million in 2016-2017, according to Forbes magazine.
On Saturday Real manager Zinedine Zidane assured Real supporters that the superstar striker "was on holiday and would be back with us on Aug. 5."

Rapidly growing bike sharing startup Mobike already has 100 million users in China. And it's now looking to the US and Europe in the hope its unique "dockless" system cam disrupt the industry.
Bike sharing startup Mobike brought a handful of the brightly colored two wheelers to showcase at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference  in Aspen, Colorado.
While many major United States cities already have bike sharing programs. Mobike cofounder and chief executive Davis Wang said he wants municipalities to take a look at his company' new concept.
"If you look at (traditional) station bikes, it's like a desktop PC," he said. "We are more a smartphone. You just use it."
Wang told the conference that the startup which launched in April 2016 decided that "the dock and the station had to be eliminated so people can use (the bikes) more easily."
With no bike stations or docks, travelers aren't restricted in their trips. Users unlock the bikes with a smartphone app.
The custom designed, aluminium frame Mobike bicycles have a drive shaft instead of a chain, disc brakes and tubeless tirws which make them virtually maintenance free. They have built in GPS, and riders recharge the battery.
In 15 months, the company has expanded to over 150 cities, and has put some six million of its connected bikes on the road, claiming to be the world's largest bike sharing company.
"We are transporting more that 20 million people a day," he said, making the bicycle more important than the taxi in some Chinese cities, offering rides at the equivalent of 50 US cents.
Mobike last month announced it has raised US$600 million led by Chinese tech giant Tencent, the largest ever for a bike sharing firm, giving it a reported valuation of over $1 billion.
It launched last month in two British cities including Manchester and is also in Sinhapore and Japan.
"We want to be flobal," Wang told AFP at the conference.
The company hopes to be in 200 cities worldwide by the end of the year, with its eyes on the US and Europe.
Wang, who formerly worked at Uber, said Mobike model can coexist with the current bike programs, and get more people interested in bicycling.
In the US, "we are studying local markets, we are in talks with local goverments."
In China, Mobike is locked in battle with rivals including Ofo, which is baked by the Chinese ride hailing giant Didi Chuxing.
Mobike faces some challenges with its business model, including getting people to handle the bikes responsibility and get them to needed locations.
It has responded with incentives that give bonus points to riders who find abandoned or damaged bikes or who bring them to needed locations.

Smart mouthed, mayhem prone anti hero Deadpool made a virtual reality debut in a Marvel Powers United game being tailored for Oculust Rift gear.
Developer Sanzaru Games collaborated with Marvel on Deadpool's virtual version based on the comic character, which was a smash in an eponymous film released last year.
The "fast talking, butt kicking Merc with a Mouth" joins Captain Marvel, Hulk and Rocket Raccoon in a game that lets players become superheroes fighting together againts super villains.
Game fans got their first shot at Deadpool in the Oculust VR game debut at Comic Con in Southern California.
More characters are expected to be added to Marvel Powers United by the time it is released next year. The price has yet to be announced.
"Crack wise and crack skulls as you wield katanas and hand cannon pistols - because why bring a knife to a gun fight whe you can have both?" a fact sheet for the game reasons.
Players wearing Rift headsets use Touch controllers to whip semi automatic pistols or Desert Eagle hand cannons from holsters and blast adversaries, prompting trademark wise cracks from their "Deadpool" persona, an advance test of the game revealed.
Katanas, the traditional Japanese swords, are unsheathed by reaching back over one's shoulders, and shuriken, the sharp edged, star shaped weapons, are thrown rapid fire with wrist flicks as Hulk smashes, Rocket Racoon opens fire from above and Captain Marvel obliterates bad guys with photon beams.
The ability of Deadpool to heal quickly from almost any injury meanwhile provides an edge as waves of enemies strike.
Marvel Powers United VR was touted as a first person, multi player game featuring explosive battles in settings from the Marvel universe.
The alliance with Marvel represented a coup for game published Oculus Studios, which has been striving to build a library of compelling experiences that will get people to buy Rift's virtual reality gear.
Rift and Touch controllers got a temporary price cut this month, bundled tohether at a discounted price of US$399.
Zombies, from the television series The Walking Dead and other demonds are coming to life for video game players in virtual words.
Gamers will be climbing into colosal war machines to battle high tech armies, wandering mutant infested post apocalyptic wastelands and going toe and toe with demons in new virtual reality offerinhs unveiled at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) last montg.
The number of E3 exhibitors involved with virtual or augmented realities more than doubled to 126 from 53 last year.
Sony built on the array of games for its Playstation VR gear, which works with top selling Playstation 4 consoles.
Sony, HTC and Facebook owned Oculus are the top players in virtual reality head gear, each striving to stake out territory in the budding market.
While Sony's VR headsets work with PS 4 consoles, competing  gear requires computers that can handle the demand of processing rich, immersive graphics in real time.

Japanese Engineers Develop Headset Less VR

Agence France Presse/ Tokyo

A virtual reality "space ride" in which viewers feel as if they are flying through the air inside a giant glass ball has been developed in Japan.
Unlike conventional VR systems, the "8K:VR Ride" - which resembles a cross between a theme park ride and a miniature IMAX theatre - does not require users to wear any headgear.
Instead they are placed on two swiveling, elevated chairs just in front of a semi spherical screen which entirely engulfs their field of vision.
"Unlike the conventional flat screen, you can see images coming closer to you physically in this dome screen," said Makoto Nakahira, an engineer at Wonder Vision Techno Laboratory.
"This is a system in which you can experience visuals that you have never seen before."
The experimental technology was unveiled to Japanese media for the first time on Tuesday before a scheduled showing at Japan's Digital Content Expo 2017 in October.
Its name refers to the screen's super high definition 8K technology, which is 16 times more detailed than most current HD images.
Wonder Vision co developed the system with Japan based NHK technology, which is 16 times more detailed than most current HD images.
Wonder Vision co developed the system with Japan based NHK Enterprises and NHK Media Technology - both affiliated with public broadcaster NHK - and RecoChoku Labo.
The space ride was first showcased at SXSW 2017, a major conference on convergence in the interactive, film and music industries, in Austin, Texas in March.
The system features a hemispherical theatre known as Sphere 5.2 - a screen 5.2 meters wide, 3.4 meters tall and 2.6 meters deep.

Jamaicans Stun Mexico, Book Gold Cup Final With US

Agence France Presse/ Los Angeles

Kemar Lawrence scored in the 88th minute to give Jamaica a shocking 1-0 upset of defending champion Mexico on Sunday in a CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinal match.
The 24 year old fullback for Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls expertly curled a left footed free kick around the Mexico wall and just under the crossbar to deliver Jamaica a stunner at the Rose Bowl.
"The best way I could put it is the Biblical story - David slew Goliath," Jamaica coach Theodore Whitmore said.
The Reggae Boyz advanced to face the host United States in Wednesday's championship match at Santa Clara, California. The US squad beat Costa Rica 2-0 in a Saturday semifinal.
Despite sending most of their best players to Russia for the Confederations Cup, the Mexicans saw the dismal result as a reason for soul searching and self examination, acting manager Luis Pompilio Paez said.
"The football of Mexico has to rise from this fall," he said. "There will be an individual and collective analysis as well as self criticism.
"We have to make adjusment. We're determined to give our best. When we do not win, we all have to do self criticism and reflection. This is a process and we all have to improve.'
It was only the third ever victory for Jamaica over Mexico as the Reggae Boyz avenged a 3-1 loss to the Mexicans in the 2015 Gold Cup final after battling them to a goal less draw earlier this month in the group stage.
"El Tri" trailed for the first time in the tournament when Lawrence chipped in the impressive shot from 25 meters out off a free kick set up by Hugo Ayala's foul on Jamaican substitute Michael Binns.
Mexico goalkeeper Jose Corona was planted too far left to make a play on the ball, tucked just under the crossbar near the far corner on the woodwork.
The seven time champions pressured Jamaica to the finish but could not net the equalizer.
"We had the illusion of giving a victory to the Mexican fans," Paez said. "What we lacked was efficiency.
"Jamaica gave priority to the defensive. Things were missing to score goals. We look for all the sides, as it is necessary to look for the goals. The effort was made, we were efficient, but not effective to solve."
The Mexican squad will now return its attention to World Cup qualifying, which resumes in September. Mexico leads the September. Mexico leads the six team CONCACAF qualifying table with four wins and two draws for 24 points.
"We want to go to a World Cup and transcend," Paez said. "We are very close to going."
Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake was credited with five saves, among his most impressive a two fisted stop in the 65th minute off a Mexico free kick by Jesus Gallardo. Time and again the Jamaica backline thwarted Mexico attacks.
The Jamaicans became the first Caribbean side to reach the North American regional tournament final when they upset the US squad 2-1 in the 2015 semifinals and the rematch will give them a chance to make history as champions.
"We want to be a top country for CONCACAF, not just Mexico of the US," Whitmore said.
But this US squad is unbeaten in 13 matches since Bruce Arena took over as a coach last year from the fired Jurgen Klinsmann, his first of eights wins in the run coming in a 1-0 home friendly over Jamaica last February.
The Americans seek a sixth Gold Cup title and their first since 2013.

MU Edges Real Madrid on Penalty Kicks

Agence France Presse/ Santa Clara

Jose Mourinho has challenged Anthony Martial to produce the goods on a more consistent basis after the Manchester United frontman caught the eye againts Real Madrid.
Martial produced a scintillating weaving run to set up Jesse Lingard's opening goal in United's 1-1 draw againts Real in the International blazed over from the spot in the penalty shootout that followed the draw.
The 21 yer old shone during his impressive debut campaign at Old Trafford under Louis Van Gaal two years ago, yet struggled under Mourinho last season - prompting speculation that he could be on the move this summer .
But after Martial looked back to his best, Mourinho admitted that talent is not the issue for the United forward.
"Obviously, we want more consistency in his talent," said Mourinho. "I think today was positive for him. That's why I left him for 90 minutes on the pitch. He was enjoying it, trying things and it's important in these friendly matches to try things, which he did.
"That's only good for his confidence."
On the stroke of half time, Martial's quick feet saw him leave both Daniel Carvajal and Luka Modric for dead, before squaring the ball across the six yard box for Lingard to tap home.
It was just reward for Lingard after he was the best player on the pitch during the first half, only a smart save from Keylor Navas keeping out a swerving shot from 25 yards in the seventh minute.
In its first pre season outing, Real was understandably rusty during the first half, but it improved significanly after Zinedine Zidane changed his entire 11 at the interval and introduced a host of youngsters.
It drew level when Victor Lindelof brought down summer signing Theo Hernandez in the area and Casemiro smashed home thw resulting spot kick.
Zidane said he was "satisfied" with the performance, particularly the contribution of the club's hot prospects.
But when asked about the depth of his squad and whether he was chasing a replacement for the departed Alvaro Morata, Zidane was cautious at being drawn over any transfer business.
"I've talked to the president, but we have a roster of 28 players and I'am happy," said the Real boss.
"Ultimately, we will see. We have until August 31, but I have not asked for any (players)."
United won 2-1 in a desperately low quality penalty shootout at the conclusion of the encounter, but it was an injury to midfielder Ander Herrera which was preying on Mourinho's mind afterwards.
The halftime  substitute lasted just seven minutes before he was forced off with a rib injury.
"For him to come off, it has to be very painful," Mourinho said. "I want to wait and see what it is but I always say there's no risk in friendly matches. If you feel that something is coming, a little injury, thethen get off. The result is not important."
Herrera is expected to join Juan Mata on the treatment table when United round off its Stateside preseason tour againts Barcelona, , in Landover, Maryland on Wednesday.
But despite a hectic period of five games in the space of 12 days, Mourinho feels the trip has been beneficial.

Indonesia's coach Luis Milla placed the blame for his squad's failure on the quality of the pitch, saying that it added extra challenges for his squad to survive the qualifying round.

Neymar Staying at Barcelona: Pique

AFP/ France

Brazilian superstar striker Neymar will stay with Barcelona, according to teammate Gerard Pique, who posted a Twitter message on the striker's status Sunday.
Spanish international defender Pique indicated the South American maestro would continue at Camp Nou by tweeting a photo of Neymar with the caption "He's staying."
The message came hours after Neymar gave Barcelona fans a dazzling reminder of what he brings, the talisman scoring twice as the Spanish giants defeated Juventus 2-1 in a pre season friendly Saturday in New Jersey.
The 25 year old Brazilian superstar is at the centre of frenzied speculation linking him to a world record £222 million (US$256.8 million transfer to Paris Saint Germain. French newspaper Le Parisien reported on its website late Sunday that the transfer of Neymar to PSG could be made official in the next few days.
And ESPN's website reported, citing and unnamed source, that Neymar had no idea why Pique tweeted the photo and message. The report also said sources had Neymar wanting to move to the French club and agreeing to terms on a deal for at least four years.
Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde swatted down talk of Neymar departing to France on Friday, dismissing "rumors" while saying the squad wants him to stay for years to come.
"This is a time of rumors. We understand it's how it is," Valverde said. "He is with us right now. One of us. It's a player we love and we want. Not only football wise, but also for the things he brings to the locker room."

Dempsey Milestone as US Down Costa Rica to Reach Final

Agence France Presse/ Los Angeles

Clint Dempsey's milestone goal sealed the United States 2-0 victory over Costa Rica on Saturday in the semi finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Dallas, Texas.
In Wednesday's final, the United States will face either defending champions Mexico or Jamaica - who face off on Sunday in Pasadena, California.
Tenacious Costa Rica stymied the five time champion United States until Jozy Altidore broke through in the 72nd minute, capitalizing on good work from Dempsey.
Dempsey come on for Paul Arriola in the 66th minute and soon made his presence felt, working his way through the defense and threading a pass to Altidore, who beat Costa Rican keeper Patrick Pemberton with a left footed shot.
Ten minutes later, 34 year old Dempsey curled a perfectly struck free kick under the wall and past Pemberton inside the near post for his 57th international goal, tying Landon Donovan's mark for most in the history of the US men's team.
Dempsey matched the record in his 136th appearance for the senior team - 17 games faster than it took Donovan to score his 57 international goals.
His first goal for the United States came in 2005 when the former Fulham player scored in a friendly defeat to England. He has scored in three World Cups and five Gold Cups.
After overcoming a battling display from El Savador in the quarter finals, the US team produced their best game of the tournament againts Costa Rica.
Veteran goalkeeper Tim Howard, Dempsey, Michael Bradley and Darlington Nagbe were all brought in for the knockout stage by coach Bruce Arena, who had experimented with an untried squad in the group stage.
Howard made a key save on Urena's attempt againts the run of play in the 37th minute, and produced another big save on Urena in the 71st to keep the contest scoreless.
The tension was rising, however, with the match set to go straight to a penalty shoot without extra time if the sides were drawn after 90 minutes.
But Dempsey - who returned to international duty in March after a heart problem saw him side lined  for six months - provided the needed spark off the bench.
"We were pretty close to getting it right in the first half," said US coach Bruce Arena. "I think as the game wore on and our opponent got tired, the goals came."
The US avenged their humbling 4-0 loss to Costa Rica in a World Cup qualifier in November - the final match before Jurgen Klinsmann was sacked as coach.
With Arena back at the helm, the USA are unbeaten in 12 matches and now have a shot at a sixth Gold Cup title and their first since 2013.
They failed to make the final in 2015, when Mexico won their seventh crown.

Neymar Dazzles As Barcelona Down Juventus

Agence France Presse/ East Rutherford, US

Neymar gave Barcelona fans a dazzling reminder of what they could be about to lose on Saturday, scoring twice as the Spanish giants defeated Juventus 2-1 in a pre season friendly.
The 25 year old Brazilian superstar is at the centre of frenzied speculation linking him to a gargantuan, world record £222 million (US$256.8 million) transfer to Paris Saint Germain.
Neymar had kept the guessing game about his future bubbling away after posting a picture of himself looking pensive on Istagram on Friday.
But there was little to suggest that the charismatic striker is overwhelmed by the transfer saga as he produced a bewitching performance in front of a sell out 82,104 crowd at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The Brazilian broke clear after only four minutes but saw a tame shot from near the edge of the area drift away from the goal.
Barcelona, with Lionel Messi starting, looked by far the more threatening of the two teams with Aleix Vidal and Messi both drawing early blocks from the Juventus defence.
At the other end Mario Mandzukic might have given Juve the lead on 14 minutes but his header from a Stefano Sturaro cross went wide.
The Italians were made to rue Mandzukic's profligacy a minute later when Neymar fired the Catalans into the lead, playing a clever one two with Paco Alcacer and drilling his finish past Gianluigi Buffon.
Nine minutes later and Neymar grabbed his second, picking his way through a static Juventus defence before burying a low shot beyond Buffon once more.
Neymar might have had a hattrick three minutes from half time, when Messi floated a delightful pass in behind the Juve defence for the Braziloan.
Buffon on this occasion was equal to the challenge however and blocked safely.
Barcelona rang the changes at half time, withdrawing all but two of their starting line up, Neymar exiting for Sergi Roberto and Arda Turan replacing Messi.
Juventus also made a raft of substitutions which led to the introduction of Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and Douglas Costa amongst others.
The changes immediately gave Juve a sharper attacking edge and Dybala was quick to test Adria Ortola with a rasping shot on 62 minutes that was turned around for a corner.
From the ensuing setpiece, Giorgio Chiellini nodded home Dybala's cross to make it 2-1.
However it was Barcelona who finished the stronger of the two sides, with Luis Suarez repeatedly threatening to extend the Spanish side's lead.
Man of the moment Neymar departed the stadium without addressing reporters, while Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde could only repeat his desire to keep the Braziloan.
"We want Neymar to be with us," Valverde said. "We know his value on the pitch and what he brings to the locker room."

De Gea To Stay At United: Mourinho

Chris Young
Agence France Presse/ Santa Clara

Jose Mourinho has given a "guarantee" that David De Gea will stay at Manchester United this season, despite the long running saga over a potential move to Real Madrid.
Transfer speculation over De Gea returning to hometown club Real has stretched on for the last two years, ever since the goalkeeper was a whisker away from heading to the Bernabeu in the summer of 2015.
But ahead of United's International Champions Cup pre season encounter againts Real, on Sunday, Mourinho has delivered an unequivocal message about the 26 year old's future.
Mourinho implied that there were negotiations with Real which fell through last summer, yet he believes the prospect of returning to La Liga has now become less appealing for the Spanish international.
"I can guarantee that he's not going this season. My feeling is that it will be very difficult for him to go," said Mourinho.
'He's a very honest boy, very straight. He was contacted for a long time. The club was closed (for negotiations).
"Then we opened (it) because I always have this feeling that when a player has the desire to go, I don't like to stop them. In the end, you don't get from them what you expect.
"So we opened it and then they decided to close.
"I don't think the feeling from him (towards Real) is very good. I see him really happy, focused and working better than ever. For me, 100 percent he stays with us."
Prior to the £75 million (US$97.4 million) signing of Romelo Lukaku, United had been keen to do business with Real after pursuing now Chelsea frontman Alvaro Morata.
But Mourinho has confirmed that Real's ex Tottenham winger Gareth Bale was never a realistic target.
He said: "You have contacts, you have feelings, you understand things. It was clear that Bale likes Madrid, likes the situation and is in a club with a very good situation now.

Henry Romero received a six game ban and Darwin Ceren for three on Saturday for "anti sporting" behavior in a CONCACAF Gold Cup match in which they bit United States players.
Los Cuscatlecos defender Romero bit Jozy Altidore on the back in El Savador's 2-0 Gold Cup quarter final loss to the US and also grabbed the US forward's nipple and twisted it.
Midfielder Ceren, who plays for Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes, bit Omar Gonzales during the contest.
CONCACAF's disciplinary committee announced the sanctions shortly before the US' semifinal clash againts Costa Rica kicked off on Saturday in Dallas.

Kolarov Exits Manchester City For Roma

AFP/ London

Serbian international defender Aleksandar Kolarov became the fourth full back to leave Manchester City this summer when he completed a permanent switch to AS Roma in Italy on Saturday.
Kolarov, 35, joins fellow full backs Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta in leaving City since the end of last season.
The move is expected to pave the way for a swoop for Monaco's Benjamin Mendy while Danilo is set to also join City from Real Madrid with the Champions League winners coach Zinedine Zidane confirming Saturday that the Brazilian was "gone".
Kolarov spent seven years at the Etihad Stadium, a period that saw City win two Premier Leagie titles, an FA Cup and two League Cups.
"When I came in 2010, honestly, I didn't expect to play so long," Kolarov told mancity.com.
"Today is the day I have to say goodbye. Everything was quick the last couple of days. For me, it's a very sad day."

Zidane: Ronaldo Will Remain Real Player, Danilo 'Gone'

Agence France Presse
Los Angeles

Cristiano Ronaldo will remain a Real Madrid player for "the next 2 to 3 years," coach Zinedine Zidane said Saturday, ending talk the Bernabeu superstar might depart for Manchester United.
On the eve of Real's pre season friendly againts United at Santa Clara, California, Zidane spoke in Los Angeles about the 32 year old Portuguese forward who is currently on vacation.
"There has been a lot of talk surrounding Cristiano, that he wanted to go," Zidane acknowledged. "I only believe in one thing - whenever I've spoken to him, he has been very relaxed.
"He's on holiday and he will be back with us on the fifth (of August). I listen, just like everyone else, but the only thing I'am concerned with is what he wants to do with Real Madrid.
"He'll be here with us on the fifth and I think he'll stay for the next 2 or 3 years he's got left with us."
Real will also play US tuneup matches on Wednesday againts Manchester City at Los Angeles and next Saturday againts bitter rivals Barcelona in Miami before next month's scheduled return for Ronaldo.
"He's on a very well deserved holiday after the year we've had," Zidane said. After Real's title runs in La Liga and for a second consecutive year in the Champions League, Zidane is confident his club will be ready when the time comes to defend those crowns.
"We know what we achieved was incredible and now there are trophies to be played for already on the eight and we're preparing for that date to start in the best possible fashion," he said in reference to the European Super Cup clash, also againts Man United, in Skopje on Aug. 8.
However Zidane confirmed Brazilian right back Danilo would be leaving the club, with the 26 year old expected to sign for Manchester City.
"Danilo has gone and (Alvaro) Morata too," Zidane said, a day after Spain striker Morata completed a move to Chelsea in a deal that could be worth up to £80 million (US$92.2 million).
Several reports have Danilo, a 26 year old right back who helped Real's Champions League titles runs the past two seasons, set for Manchester City pending a medical.

Blind 'Drivers' Step Up To Push For Driverless Cars

Ryan Beene
Bloomberg/ New York

The revolution in self driving cars holds promise for a segment of the population that thought they'd never be able to operate a vehicle: the blind.
Anil Lewis was behind the wheel of his Ford Mustang convertible on a sunny Atlanta day in 1988, when he nearly hit a pedestrian who appeared in a crosswalk ahead of him, seemingly out of nowhere.
It was then Lewis realized his deteriorating eyesight would soon end his days behind the wheel. No 53 and legally blind, the prospect of fully autonomous vehicles gives him hope of returning to the road on his own.
"If it's designed correctly, if the vehicles are accessible," said Lewis, executive director of the National Federation of the Blind's Jernigan Institute, which works to develop technologies and services that help the blind. "It's going to create an improved ability to travel that doesn't currently exist."
Advocates for the estimated 2.3 million legally blind people in the United States, and millions more with other disabilities, have joined automakers and technology companies in lobbying Congress to help spur the roll out of self driving vehicles.
A panel of the House Energy and Commerce Commityee voted unanimously Wednesday to advance the first legislation on driverless cars. Advocated for the blind have let lawmakers know they have a special set of concerns: They want accessibility incorporated into car design and states to steer clear of laws that would prohibit the blind from one day sitting in the driver's set.
They're up againts a regulatory and industry paradigm that assumes drivers see the road ahead. Policy makers and companies working on fully self driving vehicles - still many years away from being widely available - are only beginning to tackle new challenges to ensure that the blind can benefit, and some roadblocks are already emerging.
Alex Epstein, senior director of digital strategy at the National Safety Council, says autonomous vehicle technology still has a long way to go until vehicles don't have a steering wheel or brake, and the driver can be removed from the equation.
"In theory, the concept is a wonderful idea," Epstein said. "The question is how does the auto industry and the tech industry get to that place."
The National Federation of the Blind has begun airing radio ads as part of a new coalition of representing the hearing impaired, the elderly, carmakers and Securing America's Future Energy, an energy independence advocate. It's also joined the Self Driving Coalition for Safer Streets, an advocacy group that represents Ford Motor Co., Volvo Cars AB, alphabet Inc.'s Waymo unit, Uber Technologies Inc., and Lyft Inc.
The auto and tech industry's vision of robotaxi fleets could improve access to employment and education thay have long been among the blind federation's top policy priorities, said spokesman Chris Danielsen. The group is concerned about state policies that could limit the blind's access to autonomous rides in the future.
Florida, Michigan and New York already have laws that require operators of automated vehicles to have a driver's license, wich mandates a vision test. What's more, even states lacking statitutes with such requirement, according to Amanda Essex, transportation policy specialist at the National Conference of State Legislatures.
"That obviously freezes us out," said Danielsen. "Certain policy makers will say that even though it's a self driving car, I don't want a blind person behind the wheel because I don't believe that's safe."
Requiring that passengers in an autonomois vehicle that needs no human intervention have a driver's license is a "needless restriction" that would blunt the impact of the technology on the disabled community, Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE) said in a recent study commissioned along with the Ruderman Family Foundation, an advocacy group for the disabled.
SAFE has lobbied aggressively to advance autonomous vehicles. Its study found that improbed access to transportation from fully autonomous vehicles would save US$19 billion in health care costs from missed doctor's appointments and help improve job prospects for some 2 million disabled people.
The House bill would leave states in charge of their traditional areas such as vehicle registration, insurance and licensing, but says the federal goverment is the only entity that can set safety standards for autonomous vehicles. The draft dropped a provision from an earlier proposal that sought to promote access to autonomous vehicles for the disabled.
Advocates did win other provisions though, including the creation of an advisory committee within the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to examine disabled access.
Self driving vehicles that don't require intervention by a human driver will present new policy challenges at the state level that must be addressed to ensure the blind and disabled can take full advantage of the technology, according to David Strickland, counsel for the Self Driving Coalition for Safer Streets and a former NHTSA chief.
"We're going to be moving from a model where people are drivers to a model to where people are going to be passengers," he said. "You're going to end up segregating them from the use of that technology unless you amend the licensure laws."
It's a similiar situtiation for automakers, which generally haven't had to consider access for groups such as the blind or people with other disabilities, such as paralysis. Accessible vehicles are largely built by specialty retrofitters. And it's up to goverment transit authorities and taxi operators to ensure trains, taxis and other modes of transportation can be used by people with disabilities.
"When you're talking about the narrow aspects of para transit, you've really never had to think about human machine interface on a broad scale for the disabled," said Strickland, who spoke at the National Federation of the Blind's national conbention last week. Automakers will now have to "tackle the question on a broad consumer scale".
Some of the companies developing driverless cars - such as General Motors Co. and Google parent Alphabet Inc. - have already begun to tackle that.
In 2015, Steve Mahan, from the Santa Clara Valley Blind Center, traveled around Austin, Texas by himself in a Google car without a steering wheel or floor pedals, according to an announcement last year by the initiative, now known as Waymo.
Blind GM employees are advising company designers working on autonomous vehicles to make them accessible and one focus has been on the use of smartphone apps tailored for blind users, according to Renee Arrington Johnson, an industrial engineer with GM for 40 years who led the effort until she retired this month.
Other technologies are still in the research stage.
"This is a big market that you will have open to yoi, and this is independence for people who are now depending on public transportation or on taxis," Arrington Johnson, who is legally blind, said, describing how she pitched senior GM executibes on the idea. "In the past you didn't really necessarily market to a person who was blind or low vision because that really wasn't your big market."
She said most of the changes need to occur in the way information is communicated to blind users. Just like sighted people, blind people want to know where they are and about the surrounding environtment upon exiting the car.
The National Federation of the Blind discussed the blind community's needs for an autonomous car at Daimler AG's annual Sustainability Forum last year. Any company that finds out how to tap this market "will be the winners in this game," Lewis said.
"I've always said the hardest thing for me when I went blind was giving up my driver's license," he said. "It was a symbol of my independence."

Mercedes Targets Quad Bike Loving Wealthy

Colin McClelland
Bloomberg/ New York

Mercedes Benz, reeling from a massive recall over concerns about diesel emissions, is stretching its refined image with its first ever pickup truck, betting that upscale car buyers are ready for an open bed hauler with leather seats, oak trim and Autobahn handling.
The X Class, priced starting at £37,300 (US$43,200) in Germany, will reach dealerships in the brand's home country starting in November and then be rolled out to South Africa, Australia and New Zealand in 2018 and Latin America the following year. The Mercedes model will be available initially with two diesel options as well as a gasoline engine. The top of the line V6 diesel will be available as of mid 2018.
Mercedes is targeting the mid sized pickup at wealthy clients who like quad biking and sailing. Taking on a new segment far removed from opulent models like the S Class sedan shows how far the world's biggest maker of luxury vehicles is prepared to go to capture new sales. For now, it plans to stay clear of the United States competitive truck market, dominated by utilitarian vehicles like Ford Motor Co's $27,100 F150.
The X Class gives Mercedes an offering that rivals BMW and Audi are unlikely to match any time soon.
"With the X Class, we will open this segment to new customers group," chief executive officer Dieter Zetsche said in a statement. "Our pickup convinces as a workhorse just as much as a family and life style vehicle."
Daimler anticipates that demand for midsized trucks will grow by 43 percent over the next decade to about 3.2 million vehicles. While that might be attractive, moving into new segments can be a risk, especially for a brand that trades on its image for elegance and performance. Luxury pickups also have little track record of success, as General Motors Co. and Ford found when sales for the Cadillac Escalade EXT and Lincoln Blackwood failed to take off.
The vehicle, which cost "a high three digit million euro sum" to develop, will be produced as part of Stuttgart based Daimler's cooperation with the Renault Nissan alliance. Vehicles for Europe will be assembled at a Nissan Motor Co. plant in Barcelona, while models for Latin America will be built at a Renault SA factory in Cordoba, Argentina.
"The X Class is the first genuine pickup with convincing passenger car characteristics," said Volker Mornhinweg, head of the Mercedes vans unit, which developed the model. "As a result, the X Class pushes the boundaries of the classic pickup."
The model won't be offered anytime soon in the US because of the competing local full size pickups, "where as the mid size has more appeal globally," Mornhinweg said at a presentation of the dominance of the X Class outside Cape Toen that featured the model's handling of curves, vertical climbs and rocky water hazards. Mercedes also said it isn't targeting sales in China because of pricing and customers use of pickups therw as workhorses. - With assistance by Elisabeth Behrmann.

'War For The Planet of The Apes' - Apes Good Humans Bad

Dylan Amirio
The Jakarta Post/ Jakarta

Humans are known to be the only species to kill out of malice and War for the Planet of the Apes shows that fact directly. Any reason could be used for a human to resort to murder.
War for the Planet of the Apes is a classic tale of revenge, with a conclusion similiar to other revenge themed films, such as The Revenant (with a sniw capped scenery to match).
Woody Harrelson plays the ruthless Colonel McCullough, who is cold blooded enough to fit the description od pure evil.
His intention is to make sure that humas are the dominant species by wiping out the increasingly intelligent apes.
His role and his presentation remind us of a certain old time German leader named Adolf Hitler, who aimed to preserve the dominance of his race by any means necessary.
Ape leader Caesar (Andy Serkis), the first one of his brethren who learned to speak like humans do, spends most of the film filled with vengeance for the colonel that killed his family and the colonel's soldiers who wreaked havoc on his group.
At more than two and a half hours, the film's pace is a bit too slow, risking disengagement feom the audience.
But the audience will definitely stay tuned into their sympathy for the apes, who have been rounded up concentration camp style and abused by their human captors. It is a moral victory for those watching to see the apes claim their win.
This Planet of the Apes installment, which will be in theaters on July 26, presents itself as incredibly serious, as it shows that the apes are incapable of the slightest bit of humor but with good reason.
There is no humor in their situation, as a group of intelligent creatures marginalized by the human race because of the threat of carrying a virus that reduces humans to their original primitive beast like selves.
The addition of the zoo monkey referwnced only as "Bad Ape" (Steve Zahn), who tries his best to provide some sort of comic relief to the film, is appreaiated. His clumsy antics diffuse some of the tension in the film, providing the only parts where laughter does not seem inappropriate.
Otherwise, War seems to offer nothing new to the franchise, other than another struggle by the apes to achieve the freedom and right to exist as they are. This point has been made in the last few films of the franchise, and in all cases of the previous films, the apes always win somehow.
However, a major event in this franchise happens at the film's ending. How will it go? Let's just say that there are elements of the much loved chilhood film the Lion King that might draw some similiarities, you know, with leadership and all.
War is an alright film. After three films, War might mark the end of the franchise, though. The Planet of the Apes franchise has had a good run with films that have been pretty good before. Anything more would just be overkill in reminding us that the true savages are the humans rather than the beasts.

Mexico, Jamaica Advance To Gold Cup Semifinals

Agence France Presse/ Los Angeles

Defending champion Mexico claimed the final semifinal berth in the final semifinal berth in the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 1-0 win over the offensively challenged Honduras national team Thursday at the University of Phoenix Stadium.
Rodolfo Pizarro scored the only goal of the contest in the fourth minute, finishing off a nice passing series in front of the Honduras goal as Mexico took another step towards trying to win a record extending eighth Gold Cup championship.
Orbelin Pineda started the play on the left side with a short back pass to Jesus Duenas, who redirected accross the front of the goal to the back post, givinh Pizarro an easy tap in.
Mexico advances to Sunday's semifinal to set up a rematch of the 2015 final againts Jamaica, who punched their ticked earlier in the day with a 2-1 win over Canada. Mexico and Jamaica faced each other in the group stage where they played to a 0-0 draw.
The semifinal will take place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
The USA and Costa Rica will square off in the other semifinal at AT&T Stadium on Saturday in Dallas, Texas.
Honduras is eliminated from the Gold Cup after failing to score a goal in four games. Their only win came when French Guiana had to forfeit their game in the group stage after they fielded an illegal player.
Mexico reached the semis despite fielding a B team roster that includes just one player from their fourth place Confederations Cup squad.
The seven time tournament champions Mexico are now unbeaten in 10 consecutive Gold Cup contests.
Mexico had several opportunities to add to their goal total, but either failed to get a shot on goal or the Honduras defense broke up the scoring chance.
Honduras  had one last chance to equalize in the 93rd minute on a free kick but the ball sailed wide and deep, leaving them without a clear shot on net.
Honduras coach Jorge Luis Pinto said he was proud of the way his team competed.
"I am not happy but somehow satisfied," said Honduras coach Jorge Luis Pinto. "We won in behavior in the Gold Cup even if we didn't score or win,"
Earlier Thursday, goals in each half from Shaun Francis and Romario Williams secured victory for the "Reggae Boyz."
"It wasn't easy," said Jamaican goalkeeper Andre Blake. "Canada is a very good team. When we got the second goal I think we lapsed a little bit. They scored a beautiful goal. We figured it out and we won the match."
Jamaica got off to a dream start at the University of Phoenix Stadium when Francis scored after only six minutes.
Forward Darren Mattocks pounced on a stumble from Canada defender Steven Vitoria and darted into the area before squaring for Francis, who thumped his finish high into the roof of the net.
Mattocks almost doubled Jamaica's lead shortly afterward only for his shot to be well blocked by goalkeeper Milan Borjan.
Canada striker Cyle Larin went close six minutes into the second half with a sublime goal from Williams.
The Charleston Battery forward picked up Mattock's layoff before curling his shot from outside the area beyond Borjan.

Lukaku, Rashford on Targets as MU Downs City

Agence France Presse
Houston, US

Romelo Lukaku and Markus Rashford were on target as Manchester United defeated Premier League rivals Manchester City 2-0 in their International Championships Cup pre season clash here Thursday.
Belgium international Lukaku grabbed his second goal in his second start for United as the Red Devils eased past a disjointed City at Houston's NRG Stadium.
England striker Rashford meanwhile continued his impressive pre season form with his third goal in three games of United's US tour.
The game was the first ever Manchester derby played on foreign soil and both teams commemorated the May 22 attacks at a concert in the city shortly before the kick off.
"It was a very good training session," United manager Jose Mourinho said afterwards.
"We had to play well in the first half, is good intensity, the players are tired. I am really pleased and I'am sure Pep (Giardiola) is the same. The result is not the most important thing,"
City manager Pep Guardiola meanwhile shrugged off the loss, preferring to enthuse about the performance of teenager Phil Foden, a 17 year old who has emerged from the club's youth set up.
"I don't have words (...) It's a long time since I saw a performance like this - it was another level," said Guardiola, who also confirmed that defender Aleksander Kolarov was on his way out of the club, with Roma the likely destination.
"I don't like working with people who don't want to stay. He has a big chance to go to Roma. He has said he wants to leave," Guardiola said of Kolarov.
Kolarov's looming exit heightens speculation that City are close to signing Monaco fullback Benjamin Mendy.
Earlier, United enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, with Henrikh Mkhirtayan testing new City keeper Ederson with a long range effort just after 20 minutes.
Ander Herrera also tried his luck from distance shortly afterwards but the young Brazilian gathered comfortably.
At the other end meanwhile, City, who handed a debut to new signing Kyle Walker, slowly got into their stride, with a deflected Raheem Sterling effort tipped over by David De Gea.
City should have had a penalty on 31 minutes when youngster Patrick Roberts was tugged back by Chris Smalling as he burst into the area.
Instead Smalling managed to get a foot in and clear with Sterling's follow up effort blocked.
Six minutes later United took the lead with a superb goal from Lukaku.
A long clearance from Paul Pogba drew Ederson off his line but Lukaku managed to nod the loose ball past the stranded City goalkeeper before finishing from a tight angle.
Two minutes afterwards, United doubled their lead with another swift counter attack.
This time it was  Mkhitaryan who turned creator, releasing Rashford with a deft pass.
The teenage England striker picked his spot and drilled a low finish across Ederson into the bottom corner.
United continued to enjoy the better chances early in the second half, with Lukaku amost grabbling a second when his curling strike hit the woodwork on 53 minutes.
Both Mourinho and opposite number Guardiola made a flurry of changes throughout the second half as the game fizzled out.

'Killer Pitch' And Food Poisoning Haunt Asia Soccer Tours

Peter Stebbings
Agence France Presse/ Shanghai China

There was the infamous Hong Kong "killer pitch," an 11th hour cancellation of a Manchester derby in Beijing and now Arsenal players struck down with food poisoning in Shanghai.
Add to that searing heat, tropical downpours and long haul flights, and it is easy to see why Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was left wondering aloud this week whether pre season tours of Asia are worth all the aggravation.
It is no secret that the trips each summer by Europe's leading clubs are ultimately about making money.
But the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich - just a few of the teams sweeping through Asia this month, have to balance that with the toll it takes on players at a critical juncture in preparations for the season.
The money men at Arsenal would have shifted nervously in their seats when Wenger - shorn of several star players suffering food poisoning in Shanghai - was asked on Wednesday whether this was really what his side needed ahead of the start of another punishing Premier League campaign on Aug. 12.
"That is a good question," he said, smilling.
"But if you ask me is it ideal physically to prepare? I'd say certainly not.
"Has it got other advantages? Yes, because we can meet fans all over the world so that is very positive and the team bonding is easier as well because we live together for two weeks."
The 38 degree Celcius heatin Shanghai was "a shock" after Australia, the Frenchman added, after his ailing side somehow drew 1-1 with Bayern despite being outplayed, and then won on penalties.
It does not end there for the Gunners, who started with two friendlies in Australia and were to meet Chelsea in Beijing on Saturday in another exhibition game.
In Hong Kong, where Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion, Leicester City and Crystal Palace are involved in the Premier League Asia Trophy, Red boss Jurgen Klopp has struggled to keep a lid on his frustations.
Like most of Asia, the city is regularly pounded with torrential rain at this time of year, plus there is the humidity that can approach 100 percent.
Not to mention the pollution thay regularly envelopes China and Hong Kong.
Klopp, who had to shelve one training session in Hong Kong because of the weather, is particularly worried about the pitch at the 40,000 capacity Hong Kong Stadium.
In 2013, the last time the Premier League's Asian showpiece was in Hong Kong, then Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio memorably dubbed the quagmire "a killer pitch."
Andre Villas Boas, then Tottenham Hotspur manager, threatened to pull his team out over fears of injury and defender Jan Vertonghen suffered ankle damage that made him a major doubt for the start of the season.
Then last year Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was angered by the "very bad" surface at Beijing's so called Bird's Nest stadium and the derby with Manchester City was called off hours before kick off.
He said his sole objective was to get his squad home in one piece.
Like Wenger and Mourinho, Klopp appreciates the commercial aspect of the tours, which see local fans decked out in replica shirts camped outside hotels waiting to catch a glimpse of their heroes.
But the German knows he will be judged by soccer results, not the balance sheet.
"What can I say? I'am a soccer manager, I'm interested in the quality of the game and different things have influence on the quality," he told reporters in Hong Kong, voicing fears over the pitch there.
Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore will be keeping his fingers crossed for good weather for the Saturday final round of Asia Trophy matches but is confident the surface will hold up if the heavens open rain and thunderstorms are forecast.
"Effectively four years ago we said there was no chance of this thing (tournament) coming back," he admitted on Thursday.

Ozil On Verge Of Huge New Gunners Deal

AFP/ London

Arsenal playmaker Mezut Ozil is close to signing a new contract with the Gunners, according to British media reports on Friday.
The German World Cup winner's current deal runs out at the end of the 2017/2018 season, but Arsenal is confident of wrapping up negotiations in the next couple of weeks.
According to reports, the terms for the 28 year old's proposed new deal are around £280,000 (US$ 363,000) a week, which would make him the club's top earner, altough it's believed that Ozil was originally holding out for closer to £ 350,000.
Ozil and Chile international forward Alexis Sanchez have both been linked with moves away from Emirates Stadium this summer, with Sanchez attracting interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs.
Ozil signed for the north Londoners in a £ 42.5 million deal from Real Madrid in 2013.

Ronaldo Visits Valencia Owner Lim in Singapore

AFP/ Singapore

Soccer mega star Cristiano Ronaldo jetted into Singapore for a flying visit to Valencia owner Peter Lim and his family Friday on his way to a media event in China.
Dozens of fans and journalist swarmed the Real Madrid forward but where held back by security as the world sorcerer of the year dropped by a private hospital to visit Lim's daughter, Kim, and her newborn baby.
In the hospital lobby, burly bodyguards ushered Ronaldo past fans jostling with media for a picture of their hero, while others who had brought paraphernalia hoping for autographs were left disappointed. He was later smuggled out of a separate exit.
Ronaldo was due to sign an endorsement deal and meet Singaporean billionaire Lim for dinner later in the day. No details of the endorsement deal were released.
Lim is the owner of Hong Kong based Mint Media, which controls all image rights for Ronaldo, except those relating to Real Madrid. Lim's publicists said Ronaldo is on his way to China for a Mint Media event.

Road Trip Through South Africa

Cynthia EE/ The Star/ ANN

Ask my 11 year old her fondest memories of South Africa and she would rattle four names in one breath. Mind you, these would not be any of the "Big Five" - rhinoceros, elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard and lion - or other wildlife for that matter. Etched on her lips are the names of four canines she'd bonded with : Tipsy, Goofy, Zeb and Fatso.
We (which included hubby, son and daughter) had certainly not planned for this to happen. Our three week itinerary was supposed to be filled with outdoor activities that maximized game viewing, nature appreciation and culture immersion.
Cape Town provided us with a cosmopolitan view of the country once off limits to Malaysian passport holders until the fall of apartheid in 1994.
Its stunning coastline captivated us with frolicking Cape fur seals, Jackass penguin colonies and migrating southern right whales. We picnicked at Boulders Beach, home to thousands of penguins - and even swam alongside them.
After a week, we boarded an east bound two hour flight to Durban. A three hour leisurely drive took us through the pretty countryside of KwaZulu Natal to Mooi River, a farmland community. We broke the journey at Piggly Wiggly for a coffee break. As the name suggest, the cafe is adorned with cute pig ornaments and caricatures.
I became acquinted with Rooibos Espresso, a concoction of Rooibos tea and coffee with milk on the side. It's our version of Kopi Cham - plus a rich dose of flavor and aroma in burgundy.

Animal encounters.
Our journey continued through rambling hills, farms and villages - the route aptly called Midlands Meander - to the dairy farm operated by Ann Kean and her husband Drew, where we rented a gust cottage.
Once we alighted from the car, Ann emerged from her farm house brandishing a cane. We soon saw why : Four boisterous dogs bounded after her. She needed not have bothered about keeping the dogs were rolling on the lawn engaged in rowdy wrestle.
The dogs accompanied us everywhere on the farm and were rambunctious hosts in the evenings. One became particularly attached to us. Tipsy the Pitbull cross, even camped over and thankfully didn't wreak havoc to the cottage. (We were told later that she was a chewer; my ripped slipper was evidence!).
Mooi River is an excellent base to explore the Drakensberg Range, particularly Giant's Castle, renowned for its San tribe rock paintings.
The Drakensberg region is home to the largest collection of San rock art in Africa. The San or Bushmen are indigenous people of Southern Africa (San means "those without cattle") who were traditionally hunter gatherers.
The Bushmen Cave Museum established in 1903 is among the most accessible rock art site featuring 500 rock paintings, some of which are estimated to be 800 years old.
The two hour trek to the open air museum proved to be a hiker's dream, with 360 degree views of meandering rivers and green mountain range.
A guide introduced and interpreted the paintings of wildlife such as eland antelopes and human figures engaged in hunting or ritual dance.
On our return trek through the river route, we saw a large blue and red grasshopper, which I later discovered is called the foaming grasshopper, one of the toxic species known to emit poisonous foam when threatened.
Thankfully we knew better than to engage with strange creatures. Or did we?
Of all the places we'd visited, this was the toughest tosay goodbye to. Tipsy appeared particularly forlorn.
We even considered extending our stay but accomodation at St Lucia was already prepaid. The six hour drive there was filled with chatter and recollections of the dog's antics.
Upon entering the estuary located on an islet, we saw road signs warning of hippos roaming the streets at night. We didn't encounter any but saw plenty on board a cruise down the river. Pods of hippos congregated near the river banks, also home to kingfishers, African fish eagles and other birds. We spotted the first Big Five : A scowling buffalo that didn't look too happy with the intrusion of its privacy.
Eager to get the remaining Big Five off the checklist, we headed to Hluhluwe Imfolozi park on our first self drive safari. Off the beaten track, right around the corner, a lone giraffe stood in our path! We also saw zebras, rhinoceros and many breeds of antelopes before calling it a day as the summer heat became unbearable.
We headed to the Isimangaliso Estuary Beach to cool off. Keeping a lookout for crocodiles and hippos, we followed the boardwalk to the sound of pounding waves, eager for a dip in the ocean.
Except there was no ocean in sight. Stepping off the boardwalk, we found ourselves in a mini Sahara confronting an endless stretch of sand dunes. It took some 300 meters to get to the water's edge but the pounding waves and current were too strong for an idyllic swim.

Heading for a fall
The opportunity for a soak came during our next stop in Hazyview. Following the panorama route, we explored stunning waterfalls such as Lone Creek, Berlin and Mac Mac Falls. Lone Creek Falls is accessible after a short hike and we came right across the 70 m high waterfall, the height of a 23 storey building. We came prepared in our trench coats but left drenched to the bone.
We continued our drive tjrough Blyde River Canyon (at Mpumalanga), a 33 km long gorge known as the largest "green canyon" in the world, to view nature's splendor of green mountain range, deep valleys and gurgling streams.
Nestled along the panoramic route is the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre which operates open jeep tours of their facility, allowing visitors to observe cheetahs, wild dogs and other endangered wildlife.
Huddled together was a pair of Sable, South Africa's most expensive antelope, which can easily fetch 27 million rand each.
A day in Kruger National Park introduced us to warthogs, cheetahs, lions and elephants. By now we had all the Big Five checked except for the elusive leopard. Our adventure ended in Johannesburg before boarding our return flight home.
Unlike other areas in South Africa, the city didn't feel safe. Houses loomed like fortresses : barb wires on high walls, grilles on windows and doors, and equipped with sophisticated alarm systems. (Johannesburg is ranked as one of the most dangerous cities in South Africa due to reported violent crimes).
Upon our return, a well meaning friend asked if we were ever worried for our safety, whether from human or wild predators. Truth be told, the only threats that disrupted the calm of our vacation were in the form of four pooches that have trampled all over our hearts.
When pressed to reveal another South African favorite, my daughter paused for a few seconds before announcing, "Ann Marshall Bishop Kean - only if she'd give us Tipsy."

Mutual Consent, or Was Aussie Vidmar Sacked by Bangkok Glass?

Jason Dasey/ Soccer Friday

In the days before he becames a trailblazing foreign coach in Asia, Aurelio Vidmar was a flamboyant attacking midfielder, with shoulder lenght hair like a rock star, who surely thought that he had helped book Australia's place at the 1998 World Cup.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the dramatic play off againts Iran in Melbourne where Vidmar's second goal just after half time, to follow up Harry Kewell's opener, gave the Socceroos a seemingly unassailable 3-1 lead on aggregate.
But instead of becoming one of Australia's most joyous sporting moments, it turned into its most painful. The Iranians scored twice in the last 15 minutes to force a 3-3 scoreline, and progress to France '98 on the away goals rule.
Football was cruel to Vidmar two decades ago, and it must have seemed equally unfair last week when his Thai club Bangkok Glass (BGFC) announced that they were parting ways with him.
"By mutual consent" was the official line coming from the club, suggesting that management and Vidmar had amicably decided to go in separate directions because they politely agreed to disagree on football matters.
"Vidmar's tenure was brought to the end after BGFC deemed that the 50 year old Australian did not feature in the team's plans for next season, due to the difference in direction under which to take the club in thw long term," read a statement on the official wensite of BGFC.
However, sources tell ESPN FC that the break up was anything but mutual, and that Vidmar had been assured less than a month ago that his employers were happy with the job he was doing.
BGFC's 16th manager in just a decade, he leaves with the club in fifth position on the table, 10 points behind leaders Buriram United. Having taken over last August, he helped the Glass Rabbits to third spot in 2016, their best finish since 2009.
After a shaky start to the year in which they lost 4-0 to defending champions Muang Thong United and drew 0-0 with bottom feeders Super Power, Vidmar had turned things around. They handed leaders Buriram United their only 2017 league defeat in May, and had built an imppressive record at home, despite injuries, at different times, to key imports Ariel Rodriguez and Matt Smith.
Smith, of course, is a former A League rival of Vidmar who won three A League titles with Brisbane Roar, including two as captain. Skippering Bangkok Glass, having arrived in late 2014, he seemed like the perfect on field liutenant for ex Adelaide United boss in the tough 18 team TI.
But far greater than any opponent was the internal challenge of dealing with Pavin Bhirombhakdi, the volatile president of Bangkok Glass. According to sources within the club, Pavin has been tryng to influence team selections, formations and substitutions this season.
For Vidmar, who helped a low budget, no nonsense Adelaide become the first Australian team to make the final of the AFC Asian Champions League in 2008, this must have felt very uncomfortable.
Vidmar declined to give ESPN FC his side of the story, but hinted at teouble behind the secenes on Twitter when he said : "Performance = Potential + Behaviour Minus Interference."
Vidmar had done well enough, with fewer resources than big spending Muang Thong, Buriram and Chiang Rai United, to justify seeing out the rest of the season. But now, the former Australia Under 23 coach, and ex assistant to Asian Cup winning boss Ange Postecoglou, faces an uncertain future.
With this hair now conservatively coiffed, he cuts a more serious figure today than during his playing prime two decades ago when he featured in 25 games in La Liga with Tenerife and as top goal scorer in the Belgian first division with Standard Liege.
His 44 caps and 17 goals during a decade with the national team saw him inducted into Australian football's hall of fame in 2008.
Yet, the bitter irony is that he and younger brother Tony, a defender with Rangers and Cardiff City, never featured in the World Cup finals. Tony played an important role as Australia beat Uruguay in a playoff to qualify for Germany 2006, but he had to pull out of the tournament because of an irregular heart rhythm, detected in a standard fitness test.
It is not beyond the realm of possibility that Aurelio may one day coach an Asian side in the World Cup, given the high regard in which he is held in the region. After all, he was Socceroos's caretaker boss during the 3-0 victory over Canada in 2013 after the sacking of Holger Osieck until Postecoglou took over.
As unexpected as his exit from Bangkok Glass has been, he will be hopeful of swift return to management in Thailand, or elsewhere in the AFC region. Iran's miracle in Melbourne in November 1997 - however painful of those on the receiving end - proves that anything is possible in football.
